I set out to make a couple of shelving units that contained coat hooks. The units will hang in a long hallway between a garage and the house. I figured the more storage, the better. I did a terrible job of taking photos during the build, so not the best write up.
Here is the plan on paper
Each unit will be about 36″ long and contain four coat hooks. It wil contain an small shelf with a front ledge for hats, mittens, etc. Then it has a large shelf on top for more items.
I started by cutting the plywood back and adding the hardwood edging to bottom edge. I used a thick caul to help distribute the clamp pressure.
While this was drying I cut the sides and middle to size. I started with simple rectangles for now until I cut the dadoes and rabbets. I cut a dado to hold the center shelf between the two ends. I cut rabbets on the top and back of the side pieces to hold the plywood.
After I cut the joints I cut the angles off the bottom with the bandsaw.
Remnant piece of pine.
I set out to chamfer the edges with a block plane and then sanded all pieces before assembly.
Time to glue and clamp
After the glue up, it was time to add the front edging to hide the ply core.
More block planing to flush everything up and some more sanding.
Time to add some Danish oil.
The first coat of medium walnut color wasn’t dark enough, so the second coat was Dark Walnut. I waited 4 days for the oil to fully cure.
Sanded with 400 grit, then first coat of wipe-on poly. Followed by 400 grit again and poly again, 400 grit, poly, 400 grit, poly. 4 coats total.
Here it is finished, they both look the same.
Thanks, great article.
